About Our Chapter

Our chapter was organized on June 24, 1916 under the name “Molly Stark” Chapter, NSDAR. The organizing meeting was held at the Brunner House, in Alliance, Ohio, with 18 members in attendance. Ohio State DAR officers present were State Regent Mrs. Austin C. Brant of Canton, Ohio, and State Vice-Regent Mrs. Edward Harris of Cleveland, Ohio. Organizing Chapter Regent Mrs. Harry T. Miller read a congratulatory telegram from NSDAR President General Mrs. William Cummings Story of New York City.

After the organizational meeting, members learned that there already existed in NSDAR a chapter named “Molly Stark,” so the Alliance Daughters submitted another name. The name chosen was Jane Bain in honor of Jane Bain Alexander, wife of John McKnitt Alexander. Born in Mechlenburg, Pennsylvania, Mr. Alexander served as Secretary to the Mechlenburg Convention, was a member of the Provincial Congress, and was a signer of the Mechlenburg Declaration of Independence.

On February 20, 1917, Alliance’s “Molly Stark” Chapter, NSDAR, was officially chartered under the name Jane Bain Chapter, NSDAR.

Alliance, Ohio was formed from the “alliance” of three small settlements: Williamsport, Freedom, and Liberty in 1850, and later adding the fourth settlement of Mount Union in 1888. The Scarlet Carnation (“Lamborn Red” propagated by local citizen Dr. Levi Lamborn in 1886) became the state flower in 1904, and Alliance was recognized as the “Carnation City” in 1959.

Each year since 2020, our chapter has participated in Wreaths Across America with a combined total of 2000+ (and counting!) wreaths donated and placed on veteran graves in Alliance City Cemetery.

We are thankful for our sponsors, including many Alliance-area businesses, surrounding area businesses, and for those who have faithfully assisted each year: the cemetery crew, area active-duty military, veterans, color guards, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) members, as well as numerous students, scouts, and families!

In December 2024, we dedicated our “Liberty Rock,” commemorating the Revolutionary War Patriots, alongside the other memorial markers, at Alliance City Cemetery Veterans Memorial.
